COBBS
A Kent variety and sold to brewers as ‘Goldings’. Preferred by many. Slower growing, but still reaching 10–13 ft. Flowers are more open and the cones are slightly smaller. A very aromatic variety.

FUGGLE
Oldest traditional variety and still called for by English growers. In the 1960s, 75% of the hops grown were Fuggle. The habit of this variety is that it retains its foliage lower down the plant and will grow to 10–13 ft. The hop cones are very long and tight.

HALLERTAUER
A variety of bine that originates from Germany and is used in making lagers.

MATHON
This is a West Country variety and of similar habit to Cobbs. High aroma and probably tolerant of higher rainfall. Also sold as ‘Goldings’.

NORTHDOWN
New strain released by Dr. Neve of Wye College. A red bine. Similar habit to Cobbs and Mathon. Selected for its high resin content and disease resistant, particularly Downey mildew. Retains traditional English high aroma.
